What Working Mothers Need

What Working Mothers Need Before you go off on some, What about the working dads tangent, we should establish that according to a 2011 census on families and living arrangements conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, there were just about ten times as many single-parent families that were maintained by a mother than by a father. The number of mothers in the workforce is at an all-time high. A reported 70.6 percent of mothers are in the workforce leid since Rosie the Riveter have we seen these numbers. While we appreciateworking dads, were just focusing on the ladies for now. As with any demographic, these employees have a specific platzdeckchen of needs and wants. In order to successfully attract, recruit and retain these talented workers, known for their multi-tasking abilities, you, as the hiring pro, need to know exactly what theyre looking for and how your organization can provide it.Good Matern ity Leave PoliciesIts no secret that we Americans are workaholics, and this definitely translates to our maternity leave policies. We are among the stingiest in the world when it comes to giving mothers time to recuperate and bond with their newborns.By bettering your maternity leave policies and making candidates aware of them, you are sculpting a company culture that lets these families know that you care about them outside of the walls of the office building. Not to mention, its not all bad for you.Consider what Jody Heymann, dean of the Field School of Public Health at UCLA, has to say As well as receiving more one-on-one care, infants are more likely to be breast-fed, which lowers illness and hospitalization rates for infants and benefits womens health. Beyond the marked health advantages, paid maternity leave yields economic gains in terms of reduced health care costs, reduced recruitment and retraining and improved long-term earnings for women.Telecommuting OpportunitiesRecen tly, telecommuting has taken a hit, with the likes of Best Buy and Yahoo cutting or reducing their telecommuting programs. Its not all bad When companies work with their employees, clearly define expectations and use good communication, telecommuting can be a mutually beneficial tool. Parents benefit from spending more time at home, with their families. Even if the time is still spent working, we must also consider commuting time as well as the time it takes to get ready for your day. From managements perspective, telecommuting has been proven to improve productivity, commitment to the company, work-life balance and retention. While were on the subject, Marissa Mayer, the CEO of Yahoo in charge of the decision to ban telecommuting, has recently taken a lot of flack from working mothers, because when Mayer became a new mother, she had a nursery actually built into her office. And I bet that as soon as every one of you becomes the CEO of a successful company, you can build whatever the heck you want in your office, until then, focus on your own situation and work with what you have.Device FreedomIt is inarguable that we work too much, we dont leave the office at the office, we dont take enough vacation time, we over-stress ourselves, and were spending less and less time as a family unit. We know all of these things, yet we do little to remedy them. As technology advances, there is seldom a part of the day that we arent plugged in at work, why not allow these working mothers to utilize the technology in front of them to communicate with their children and/or their child care providers. Piece of mind can go a very long way in the productivity and happiness of a mother. Some FlexibilityAll of the above boil down to one simple idea flexibility. Whether its creating a relaxing space for the new moms in your company to pump or building a day care policy into your new company HQ, having a flexible viewpoint when you approach working moms in your company makes sense. You dont have to be a huge corporation to do it either we recently spoke to a 74-person company that turned a previously unused conference room into a playroom so that their employees could come in on snow days. Get flexible.

Finding Work in the New Gig Economy

Finding Work in the New Gig EconomyFinding Work in the New Gig EconomyLast year, the Freelancers Union released a study from the research firm Edelman Berland that revealed that 53 million Americansdo freelance work. Surprisingly, that number represents 34 percent of the American workforce, which means that about one in three workers have an income on the side. Does that mean that more than 30 percent of the countrys workforce is building a dream job on the side? Not necessarily. As weve learned from coverage of the Internets gig economy, freelance work can mean a lot of different things, and its not the only alternative to traditional jobs. The Freelancers Union survey defines freelancers as individuals who have engaged in supplemental, temporary, or project- or contract-based work in the past 12 months. Heres a breakdown of what kinds of work freelancers and gig workers get into Independent contractors, 40 percentIndependent contractors are your typical freelancers. Working without a full-time employer, they piece together their income from freelance, temporary, and supplemental work in specific areas of expertise like copywriting, graphic design, or virtual assistance. Moonlighters, 27 percentMoonlighters take on freelance work in plus-rechnen to their full-time, regular employment. These employees may or may not be building up to make the leap to full-time freelance they simply use their specialized skills to take on extra projects in the evenings or weekends.Diversified workers, 18 percentDiversified workers are true hybrids, building an income from a combination of some traditional employment (such as a part-time administrative assistant job), freelance work, and work from the gig economy of small jobs (such as Uber or Fiverr). Temporary workers, 10 percentTemporary workers are traditional full-time employees with a very short contract. These freelancers pick up full-time work (such as nine to five consulting support) for a specific length of time. Then th eyre on to the next client. This work may take place in person, or it may be completed virtually. Freelance geschftsleben owners, five percentFreelance business owners make up a unique hybrid group of part-freelancer, part-business owner. These workers might do so much freelance work that they subcontract or hire other freelancers to work as a team to complete the work. This leaves the freelance business owner both actively working in an area of expertise and managing a team of employees. A great example of a freelance business owner might be an independent website developer who recruits a copywriter, designer, and coder to complete a large-scale project. Alternative workAlternative jobs werent represented in the Freelancers Union study, but these non-traditional approaches to traditional careers are on the rise, as well. If you dont enjoy the work environment that typically comes with your job, you might investigate alternative work models specific to your field. For example, there is a rising demand among staffing companies for travel nurses. This is a great opportunity for nurses who dont want to work in a hospital setting. A classroom teacher might also be able to transition into an alternative career as a virtual teacherfor public schools.

Surviving the Adjustment Period of a New Manager

Surviving the Adjustment Period of a New Manager Surviving the Adjustment Period of a New Manager Think about your first steady, professional job. It is an exciting time but also nerve wracking while trying to adjust to a new environment with a new culture and established norms. Well, becoming a manager is a lot like that first professional experience. Entering the job, you know you are qualified and capable of performing the job, but you are also in the spotlight to prove your value to others. As a manager, you are expected to already be an expert at everything, even though that person may be experiencing scenarios never before encountered. Like any other role, managing people must be learned and learning takes time. Just because your new boss has the first-day jitters doesn’t mean that he or she is not capable or competent. Most new employees can take some solace in the fact that they are expected to make some mistakes as they learn the ropes. But as a manager, that inherent learning curb no longer applies. Any mistakes made can have dire consequences and not only is the manager responsible for personal mistakes, but also those of the entire team. Needless to say, the stakes are very high leading to equally high anxiety. Understanding the pressures being exerted on your manager to get everything right may help you understand why he or she is so focused on perfection and sympathize with the plight. Asking questions is a part of any employee’s professional development, but, as a manager, you have to be very selective in the questions you ask. Since you are supposed to know everything about everything, appearing ignorant can lead to a loss in confidence from your team. But, when first starting out, no one can know all of the details understood by others who have been in place for years. And the difference between asking a question as a peon and as a manager is that managers have a very limited pool of people to whom he or she can turn for answers. Most managers avoid asking for help from underlings in order to avoid that potential loss in confidence, so helping your boss out by offering lessons on the daily functioning of the office can benefit both parties. When you have a better understanding of where your new manager is coming from, you can help create an environment where it is easier for him or her to find help when needed while also building a good foundation for a quality professional relationship.

The One Word That Could Lead You Down the Path to Success

The One Word That Could Lead You Down the Path to Success The One Word That Could Lead You Down the Path to Success Wouldn’t it be great to have the answer to success? One word or even one sentence that could immediately propel you straight to the top? Sadly, we all know that this belief is just that- a belief. But when asked what the single most important factor in their success through life was, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett both had the same single-word reply: Focus. But that doesn’t mean exactly what you think it does. As New York Times bestselling author Greg McKeown explains in his recent LinkedIn article: “When people speak of focus they usually mean having a single goal. It is a static thing, a thing you have.” Focus, in his words, becomes viewed as a noun. On one hand, this works great because it gives you a clear, obvious objective to pursue, be it getting a raise, starting a company, or curing cancer. But if you’re putting all of your attentions on that one thing, you may not see other opportunities that come your way. That’s why the ability to focus- as a verb- is just as important as having a focus. Using a fantastic example, McKeown explains: “Imagine if the moment you woke up this morning your eyes focused one time and then never adjusted again. You would be out of focus all day. Our eyes produce clarity through a perpetual process of adjustment.” In other words, to use focus as a path to success, you have to be constantly adjusting to what’s in front of you. The solution? Bring the two together and concentrate on developing them simultaneously. The author offers a few main ways to do this: by asking the right questions, by finding time to escape, and by really treating your time as valuable. Here’s a recap of his advice- plus some questions to ask yourself about how you can focus better. 1. Ask the Right Questions Focusing means viewing your career on a larger landscape than just your to-do list or your current position and company. To do this, it helps to set aside time to regularly think ahead- to focus not just on where you are now, but on where you’d like to be in the future. Ask Yourself Do I see myself at the same company two years from now? What professional goals do I still have from before I applied for this job? What makes me stand out as an invaluable employee? Why did my co-worker get that promotion over me? 2. Find Time to Escape Before you dismiss this step and say, “but I’m too busy,” consider this: Even Bill Gates makes time in his schedule to step away from the noise and clutter of day-to-day life and focus on the bigger picture. “Twice a year, during the busiest and most frenetic time in the company’s history, he still created time and space to seclude himself for a week and do nothing but read articles (his record is 112) and books, study technology, and think about the bigger picture,” McKeown writes. “Whether you can invest two hours a day, two weeks a year, or even just five minutes every morning, it is important to make space to escape in your busy life.” Ask Yourself Is it more beneficial to sit in on this meeting or spend an hour concentrating on personal writing? What article can I read that will spark my excitement about something new and interesting going on in my industry? When was the last time I took a moment out of the day to think about my goals? 3. Treat Your Time as Valuable Perhaps the largest part of focusing is making sure that your schedule allows you to do so. Remind yourself that your time is extremely valuable and that you only have a certain amount of hours in each day to get things done- then find ways to step away from nonessential time-sucks that hold you back from your bigger goals. Ask Yourself Should I be giving my personal number out to everyone? How often am I checking my email, and is that distracting me from real tasks? How much time out of every day should I commit to spending in meetings? Am I generally happy with how I’m spending my time? These steps can help make sure your career is going exactly where you want it to go. If you find you’ve been running low on inspiration or commitment, take some time to really find your focus. Success is bound to follow. Photo of glasses focusing courtesy of Shutterstock.

Be a Better Boss

Be a Better Boss Be a Better Boss When it comes to the climbing the corporate ladder, most workers strive to advance into a senior position, but many of the employees who are given promotions admit to being less than prepared for the extra responsibilities. While a number of senior managers do have the capabilities to handle the additional workload that comes with a promotion, many may not be ready to take on some of the challenges that comes with the new territory of overseeing a department. The result of this has led to several blogs on Vault about dealing with your horrible boss and how to say no to your supervisor. However, bosses can avoid all of that and wont have to worry if their underlings are searching for a job behind their back if they just follow some simple steps:Don't doubt. A number of senior managers may not have been trained to do the job, but any work experience is relative when trying to become a better boss. Paul Becket, bureau chief of The Wall Street Journal, said that newly appointed supervisor s should think about their previous managers and draw on their behavior as an example of how they would like to be (or not to be) as they settle into their new title.Don't try to make friends. Making the transition from colleague to supervisor can often be an uncomfortable situation when trying to manage coworkers. Newly appointed managers, however, should remember that they were promoted on their merit and that they need to make sure their team succeeds. Becket said one of the biggest mistakes that a new supervisor can make is to try to remain everyone's friend. New managers should emphasize ways they can help their employees develop additional skills and prepare them for future challenges.Become a job coach. Career consultant Monica Wofford said that many new managers don't instruct their team properly in order to get the job completed. She suggested that managers learn how to become better teachers and coaches in order to encourage successful job performance.Seek clarification a nd support. Those who are newly promoted may feel as if they were thrust into their new positions without the proper training. As a result, it is common for them to feel a bit overwhelmed by the change. Wofford said that supervisors need to seek their peers to determine their exact responsibilities, including performance evaluations and expectations. Managers can also seek support from their supervisors about how they can best drive positive change within the organization, not just complete their current assignments.Be frank, open and enthusiastic. New managers must remember to always keep the lines of communications open. Becket said that some of the best bosses help employees celebrate their accomplishments and share in their disappointments by being honest and showing sincere passion about their work.Published Courtesy of Brafton

Interaction Designer Job and Salary

Interaction Designer Job and Salary Interaction Designer Job and Salary Utilizing words, visuals and user behaviors, it takes someone with a special skill set to foster meaningful exchanges between people and digital products. That’s why interaction designer is one of the most in-demand jobs in the creative industry right now.   Interaction design is closely related to the broader field of user experience (UX) design. Both work together on the development of websites and apps, but the interaction designer narrows the scope to focus on each individual moment of the customer experience, using logic and relationships between digital elements to help consumers complete actions in the most efficient and pleasant way possible. It’s an interaction designer’s ability to understand a customer’s mindset that has resulted in creative agencies and other businesses becoming so eager to hire them.   According to Amy Mangan, division director of The Creative Group in Atlanta, it’s a job seeker’s market for professionals with these skills. “There remains an incredibly high demand for these candidates, and the competition among hiring companies is tough,” she said. “Organizations are moving swiftly and making aggressive offers to secure talent so they don’t miss out on the few qualified candidates in the market.” Is this the job for you? GET THE SALARY GUIDE Duties and expectations Ultimately, the interaction designer is responsible for ensuring the end product meets the consumer’s needs in the best way possible. However, the exact responsibilities can vary depending on the size of the company and design team. For example, interaction designers may be called upon to perform customer research and persona development in small or midsize businesses - tasks that typically fall to UX designers at larger organizations. Basic duties of an interaction designer include: Assisting with the development of product design strategy   Determining customer goals and defining the product interactions necessary to achieve them Compiling user, business and technical requirements to create product information architecture Creating wireframes and prototypes that illustrate key product interactions Working with the core design team to develop layout and visuals Collaborating with the product development team to ensure an efficient customer journey Conducting product testing to identify problems and areas for improvement within the customer experience Presenting concepts to clients, leadership and design peers Staying up to date with industry trends and best practices Adjusting design concepts as consumer and market needs change Professional experience and skills Interaction designers should have a bachelor’s degree in a field like product management, business administration, engineering, digital communication, design or information systems. Many employers seek candidates with two to five years of experience in interaction design or related fields, such as graphic design and UX design.   Interaction designers are also expected to be proficient in industry-standard design programs like Adobe Creative Suite and Axure, used for wireframing and prototyping. Experience with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word and PowerPoint, is useful in creating presentations for both internal teams and clients. Additional skills, including an understanding of graphic design principles and technical or coding proficiency, are a plus.   Beyond the competencies and experience listed on their resume, a solid interaction designer candidate should have a strong digital portfolio demonstrating their capacity to create work that engages users and showcases a variety of project types and audiences.   Because this role relies heavily on cross-team partnerships, soft skills are an absolute must. “Interaction designers must create compelling interfaces that seamlessly marry the visual design aspect of a site or app with functionality and usability,” Mangan notes. “Collaboration is key for interaction designers, as they are not only operating alongside the design and creative teams, but often with key stakeholders as well.” Critical soft skills for this role include verbal and written communication, which is crucial for working between departments and with clients or end users. Alex Kreutler, a Columbus, Ohio-based division director with The Creative Group, adds that an outstanding interaction designer should be someone with “a logical thought process who isn’t afraid of complex problem solving and can anticipate what users want and need.” As the roles can be fast paced, interaction designers must also possess outstanding time management and organizational abilities.

Budget Management Tips for New Managers

Budget Management Tips for New Managers Budget Management Tips for New Managers When an employee is promoted to his or her first management role, it is likely that this will be the first time he or she manages a department budget. Most new managers receive little or no formal training in how to develop a budget forecast, track their expenses, or how to make mid-year adjustments. They are often handed a spreadsheet or report from their manager, or the finance department, and expected to know how to do it, or learn by trial and error. While “trial and error” can be an effective way to learn a new skill, it would be better if a new manager didn’t have to make too many painful errors. Here are a few tips if you have just been promoted as a manager with a budgeting responsibility. Invest the Time to Learn Right From the Start There is no better time to ask “stupid” questions than when you are brand new to something and have never done it. Better ask and spend the time upfront in learning, than wait until someone has to point out  your mistakes. Request time from your manager (or predecessor if you can) to review the underlying philosophy, the overarching goals, the format, and each line item. If your organization has a finance person, ask that person to spend time with you as well. Most will be flattered and willing to share their expertise. After all, if they can train you how to do things according to their specifications upfront, you’ll be less of a headache for them later on. Take a “Finance and Budgeting for Non-Financial Managers” Course Check with your local university business schools, under “Executive Education.” Most business schools offer one- to three-day, non-credit courses. During or after the course, take the time to review your company’s annual report and understand the various financial ratios and reports. Manage Your Department Budget Like It’s Your Own Business When we work for large organizations, we tend to treat “the company’s” money as if it grows on trees. It doesn’t, and it’s now your job as a manager to take personal ownership of your department’s resources. Be a Team Player If possible, review your manager’s budget. While it’s important to take ownership of your budget, your unit is part of a larger entity. Ask your manager to show you where your budget fits into and supports the big picture as well as the interdependencies with your peers. There may be times when another department needs money for goals that are a higher priority than yours. Don’t wait to be asked or have it taken away- be proactive and offer to help your peer manager. Youll be seen as strategic and collaborative. Don’t Play Stupid Games Just because “everybody does it” doesn’t mean it’s not stupid and bad for the company. An example of a typical stupid budgeting game that managers play is “use-it or lose-it spending.” It is when you are getting close to the end of the year, and your budget is running under your forecast. In previous years, when you underspent, your next year’s budget was set based on that year’s actual. So, in order not to have your budget cut again, you go on a shopping spree- buying stuff you don’t need or stocking up just in case you might need it. Track Your Expenses Monthly and Make Proactive Corrections Don’t assume that “someone” will tell you when you are over budget. In fact, you might even have to ask for monthly reports or keep track yourself. Don’t wait until the end of the year, when it becomes a surprise to you and your boss. By then, it’s too late to investigate and make corrections. Be accountable, measure yourself, and proactively report to your manager. Be Transparent and Involve Your Team Share your budget with your team, perhaps even  getting them involved  in setting up the forecast. Involving your team and helping them understand the budgeting process creates a sense of shared ownership and encourages your employees to find creative ways to manage expenses. Be Strategic Don’t just take last year’s actuals and add 10 percent to next year’s forecast. Start with developing a strategy and goals, then determine the resources required to achieve those goals. If you require more than last year, prepare a business case to justify your request for additional funding. Don’t Overdo It While managing the budget is an important role for a manager, never lose sight of the most important assets: your people! Make sure you are spending at least five times the amount of time developing your team than crunching numbers.

5 phrases with no English translation, but capture what you think

5 phrases with no English translation, but capture what you think 5 phrases with no English translation, but capture what you think You’ve likely heard (and used) some popular phrases from abroad that have made it into our lexicon, like  schadenfreude, the German word for  taking pleasure  from another’s misfortune, or my personal favorite,  hygge, the Danish term for a feeling of coziness that’s  suddenly everywhere  stateside. Peppering our everyday conversations with the life-illuminating expressions of  other cultures  links us to our shared humanity, reminds us that we have something to learn from others, and sometimes just makes us laugh. Here are 5 words that quickly and beautifully distill some very “Thrivey” concepts less elegantly rendered in English. Which will you work into your dinner conversation tonight?1.  IlungaFrom Tshiluba, a language in the southeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, this has been called one of  the  most untranslatable phrases. It expresses, in a single breath, the willingness of a person to forgive a first slight while growing more cautious upon enduring â€" and forgiving â€" a second one, and finally ceasing to pardon the wrongdoer for a third and final transgression. What I like about  ilunga  is that it acknowledges that forgiveness of ourselves and those around us is essential to our wellbeing and evolution, but also grants that we must recognize when it’s no longer in our best interest to tolerate another’s unwillingness or inability to appreciate the generosity of our continued forgiveness without changing their behavior.2.  ForelsketThis Norwegian word captures the euphoria of falling in love. I love the idea of using a linguistic construction from a foreign tongue to say what is ultimately unsayable because, really, the bliss of first love defies language. It is ineffable, a word young adult novelist Laurie Oliver once described as “a feeling so big or vast that it [can not] be expressed in words.” It’s meant, in other words, to be experienced rather than understood and articulated.3.  SaudadeA Portuguese word that communi cates a state of longing for that which has been loved and lost or for something that is no longer tangible or can never exist. Sometimes, I think what we long for says more, if not as much, about us as our lived realities.  Saudade  speaks to that private space in our hearts â€" a secret gallery â€" where our truest self and desires come to life in the most vibrant colors and defined shapes.  It may be tinged with sadness, even loneliness because it can’t be manifested in reality, but there is also a bittersweet joy in knowing it is a place to retreat to that belongs to us alone.4.  SitzfleischAccording to the  Quartzy  newsletter, this German word roughly translates to “chair glue,” getting at the power of situating your butt in a seat to persevere your way through a difficult task or problem. It reminds me of a famous Oliver Stone edict about how to write: Ass + chair = pages. Or, as the old adage clunkily goes in English, “putting your nose to the grindstone.” To achie ve sitzfleisch, Quartzy writer Ephrat Livny recommends that you “Forget your feels. Ignore your boredom. Muscle through. Like Yoda says, ‘Do or do not. There is no try.’ ”5.  Wabi-SabiThis lovely Japanese phrase encourages us to see beauty in imperfection. I think of our imperfections as the chisel that molds ordinary things into the extraordinary â€" and unique. The nicks and dents in an old treasure chest, or that chip in a favorite cup, represent the beautiful messiness of the lives we’re living and the memories we’ve made. This article first appeared on Thrive Global.

Sole Surviving Sons and the US Military Draft

Sole Surviving Sons and the US Military Draft Sole Surviving Sons and the US Military Draft Contrary to popular belief, only sons, the last son to carry the family name, and sole surviving sons must register for the draft, they can be drafted, and they can serve in combat. However, they may be entitled to a peacetime deferment if there is a military death in the immediate family. Surviving Child Specifics Keep in mind that the survivor provisions are directly related to service-connected deaths. The mere fact that a man is the only child or only son does not qualify him for consideration; he must be the survivor of one who died as a result of military service. The law provides a peacetime exemption for anyone whose parent or sibling was killed in action, died in the line of duty, or died later as a result of disease or injury incurred in the line of duty while serving in the armed forces of the United States. Also included are those whose parent or sibling is in a captured or missing status as a result of service in the armed forces. This is known as the surviving son or brother provision. A man does not have to be the only surviving son in order to qualify; if there are four sons in a family and one dies in the line of duty, the remaining three would qualify for surviving son or brother status. The surviving son or brother provision is applicable only in peacetime. It does not apply in time of war or national emergency declared by the Congress. Military Discharges Under the Surviving Child Rule In addition to peacetime draft deferment, the Department of Defense authorizes discharges for any son or daughter in a family in which the father or mother or one or more sons or daughters: Have been killed in action or have died when serving in the U.S. Armed Forces from wounds, accident, or diseaseAre in a captured or missing-in-action statusHave a permanent 100 percent service-related disability (including 100 percent mental disability), as determined by the Department of Veterans Affairs or one of the military services, and are not gainfully employed because of the disability This voluntary separation does not apply during times of war or national emergency declared by Congress. It also does not apply to commissioned officers or warrant officers unless they were involuntarily drafted into the Armed Forces. Additionally, a service member who enlists, reenlists, or voluntarily extends his or her active-duty period after having been notified of the family casualty on which the surviving status is based shall be considered as having waived his or her rights for separation as a surviving son or daughter. A member who has waived the right to a separation as a surviving son or daughter may request reinstatement of that status at any time. Assignment Limitations of Surviving Son or Daughter In addition to being able to request a discharge, sole surviving sons and daughters are exempt from involuntary deployment or assignment to combat areas. However, for the assignment limitation program, there are a couple of differences. First of all, it applies to commissioned and  warrant officers, as well as  enlistment members. The biggest difference, however, is that under the discharge provisions, an enlisted member doesnt have to be the sole surviving son or daughter in order to apply for a discharge. Under the assignment policy, however, one must be the sole surviving  son or daughter. Sole surviving sons or daughters, upon request (or request from members immediate family) for noncombat  duty, may not be assigned to duties normally involving actual combat or to duty where the member might be subjected to hostile fire. In the  Air Force, the deferment request must come from the member, not the immediate family. Members may waive entitlement to the assignment limitation, whether entitlement was based on the members own application or the request of the members immediate family. Waiving Sole Surviving Son Status Unless entitlement is waived, sole survivor  military members  will not be assigned to: Combat and hostile fire areasDuties that require travel within the limits of the hostile fire zoneA command where combat conditions exist unless the area is not physically located within the geographical limits of the hostile fire zone The requirement that death or disability be a direct result of the hazards of service does not require that the family members death or disability occur in combat or during assignment to a designated hostile fire or imminent danger area but does require that death is determined as in the line of duty.   Members who have waived sole surviving son or daughter status may request reinstatement of that status at any time. If reinstatement is approved, the member will be removed promptly from the hostile fire area or to a safe haven within the combat zone until reassignment.

9 Companies That Will Make Your Commute Easier 9 Companies That Will Make Your Commute Easier Most people who drive or otherwise commute to work can agree on at least one thing: the commute stinks. Whether you’re stuck in rush-hour traffic, navigating road closures, or running late because the subway or metro line is operating with delays, work commutes never seem to be easy or pleasant. That’s just one reason to love these nine companies- each has policies in place to make your commute less stressful, whether that’s instituting ridesharing programs or giving you the opportunity to work from home. So, if you’d rather leave a stressful commute in the rearview mirror, get your resume ready and apply below. Commuter Benefits: “Driving to work can be expensive and stressful,” Intuit admits on its website. “Plus, all of those cars on the road take a toll on our planet. To make getting to work easier, greener and less of a hassle, we offer a variety of commuting options.” Those options include carpooling, car sharing, bicycling, and “guaranteed ride home” programs. What Employees Say: “Smart co-workers, great company-wide support/value for design and user research, good compensation and benefits, great company culture. Management open to feedback + many avenues to help solve what you think needs improved.” - Current Employee Commuter Benefits: According to its website, Draft Kings offers Zipline discounts. Plus, it adds, “we know sometimes things come up and are flexible with our informal sick and vacation time,” which could make it easier to work from home when you really need to. What Employees Say: “Perks are awesome. Snacks, coffee [and] nitro, beer, catered food on Fridays, haircuts, massages, manicures- the list goes on. Most of the people are great. Compensation is on par or above places.” -   Current Employee Commuter Benefits: According to its website , Asana offers “commuter benefits” and “Uber credits,” so that your ride into work doesn’t hurt your wallet- too badly, anyway. What Employees Say: “Challenging problems to solve, emphasis on learning, culture that encourages work-life balance, incredible amounts of autonomy for individual contributors, managers that serve as mentors and advocates, respectful and intentional community.” - Current Employee Commuter Benefits: BNY Mellon boasts flexible work arrangements- meaning, the chance to work from home and reduce your commute to zero miles- and “leave policies and programs designed to assist with both personal and family responsibilities,” according to its website . What Employees Say: “Benefits are better than at many other financial companies. Management very engaged and approachable at all levels, including the President and CEO. Lots of feedback to make sure your career goals are being met, and opportunities are presented to grow or change into new roles. You can be a major contributor and earn a good salary without taking the management track.” - Current Employee Commuter Benefits: LendingHome lists “commuter benefits” as one of the perks of working for the company on its website . “We find the best people, give them room to run, and watch amazing things happen,” LendingHome says. What Employees Say: LendingHome is the best mortgage origination and operations company I have worked for since joining the industry in the mid 1990s. The corporate culture puts people first but still delivers a strong & innovative tech-based lending platform. The onboarding and training program is the best I have experienced. Highly dedicated and collaborative team.” - Current Employee Commuter Benefits:  While PWC doesn’t specifically list commuter benefits on its website, it does seem to offer employees ample opportunity to nix their commute entirely by taking time off. “We think everyone deserves some time off to truly unplug and relax,” the website says. “But how often does that happen? Even during the smoothest times, integrating life and work can be challenging enough. That’s why we created opportunities for everyone to unplug, relax and rejuvenate through a range of paid time off programs, including year-round ‘flex days,’” which commonly mean the chance to work from home or elsewhere. What Employees Say: “There is a lot about the firm that is great. It is a great culture that values collaboration (below the partner level), that truly values diversity of its employees, and that is very collegial.” - Current Employee Commuter Benefits: When it comes to a PTO policy, “our policy is simple,” Chegg states on its website . “We don’t have one. Our employees work with their manager to schedule time off and we don’t track it.” If that’s the case, say sayonara to a few commutes, then! What Employees Say: “Incredibly diverse, collaborative and welcoming place to work. Opinions here are welcomed, discourse encouraged and leadership promoted.” -   Current Employee Commuter Benefits: Gartner lists a “bike to work scheme” as one of its employee perks on its Glassdoor benefits profile . Plus, in their benefits reviews on Glassdoor, some employees mention a “car allowance” for sales employees who likely use their car to drive on the job. What Employees Say: “Modern culture, flexible work environment, great facilities and amenities at work- gym, chefs, pool tables, etc. You will get a lot of education and exposure with working with enterprise size clients and C-Level executives. A lot of perks come with the company, great vacations, team days, fun events, and fun quarter closes.” - Former Employee Commuter Benefits: “Keep yourself and your loved ones healthy with competitive benefits packages, as well as gym discounts, commuter benefits programs, catered lunches in our main offices, and a flexible vacation policy,” MuleSoft promises on its website . What Employees Say: “Outstanding culture and great selling proposition. We are truly enabling customers to digitally transform their businesses. This allows us to have C-Level business conversations with our customers. As someone in sales that is an exciting and rewarding situation. Plus the culture is great. Everyone is smart and in it to win.” - Current Employee
